Steve Pearson, former Defence Maritime Regulator and Commander of HMS Ark Royal, joins Safeguard Engineering Ltd (SEL) as a Principal Consultant on Monday, 1st March, 2021. He will be supporting existing SEL projects in Defence Safety and Environmental Policy and will also work alongside the senior team to develop existing and new business streams.

Steve has a wealth of experience having served with the Royal Navy for 38 years.  He began in the Fleet Air Arm as an AEW Observer and moving on through the Warfare Specialisation as a Gunnery Officer and Area Air Defence Specialist rising to Command HMS Newcastle. This was followed with spells instructing in the sea training school, including developing programmes for the Navies of South Africa, Poland and Norway.  Then came a tour with NATO leading the NATO Counter-IED Task Force and integrating Albania and Croatia into the Alliance. 

His seagoing career culminated as Commander of HMS Ark Royal and as Captain Surface Ships in Portsmouth responsible for generating the Aircraft Carrier, Destroyers and Frigates for operations. A tour as Head of PR for the Navy included developing Branding Rules, the Navy Website and developing TV documentaries.

As Head of the Defence Maritime Regulator Steve was responsible for Health, Safety and Environmental Protection for all Defence Maritime Activity – Shipping, Diving and Port Operations.  Within this role he excelled in understanding legislation, developing regulation, and delivering safety and environmental management audits.
