The Safeguard Engineering team enjoys a challenge and 17 members of staff signed up in November to support the Blesma Remembrance 11k Challenge.  These kind individuals and their sponsors raised an incredible £1,893.00 in donations. This was increased by a match funding donation of £750.00 from Safeguard, bringing the total amount raised to a fantastic £2,643.00.  The 11k Challenge event has so far raised close to £20,000.00 for Blesma and Safeguard is proud of the contribution they have made to achieve this total.

The challenge Blesma set was to complete an activity for 11k to honour and remember armed forces members who have died in the line of duty and those who came home injured.  Blesma is still caring for surviving World War II veterans and now supports a new generation of amputees from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. The charity gives them specialised care as they face their onward journey and empowering them to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

The team took on a variety of 11k Challenges including running, walking, cycling, and rowing.  Hal Magill and Becky Higgs were first to complete their challenge and very bravely put on wetsuits on a cold November day to kayak an 11k course around Portsmouth and Southsea.  A team of six from our Bristol office were organised by Holly Turner who planned an 11k run around the city centre, even taking on the challenge of Brandon Hill.  They were ably supported by Steve Price acting as coach, navigator, and motivator from the comfortable saddle of his bike!  Brian Nicholson took to his rowing machine and rowed 11,011m 11 times before Remembrance Sunday and Steve Beech set off on his mountain bike and cycled a circuit that included 1,100m of hill climbs.  Other staff members went out on individual runs, dog walks, family walks and ‘bimbles’ from their homes, all proudly wearing their Blesma running vests and t-shirts.

Director, Steve Beech commented:

“It has been a fantastic effort by all involved and I’m incredibly proud of our team and what they’ve achieved for Blesma.  When added to other fundraising events we have held and taken part in we have raised over £4,600.00 for Blesma this year.  We are all inspired by the work of Blesma and as a business Safeguard is committed to giving £5,000 a year in match funding to our chosen charities.”

Blesma Corporate and Regional Fundraising Manager, Chris Knight added:

“The Safeguard team really got stuck into our Remembrance 11k Challenge and have raised a fantastic amount of money for us. Our corporate charity of the year partners are so important to our fundraising efforts and it is wonderful to have a corporate partner who offers match funding as well.  Huge thanks to the Safeguard team and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next to continue their fundraising efforts.”
